Introducing Deja on Ice: My Adult Figure Skating Journey

This past January, I returned to the sport of figure skating after a five year hiatus. For context, I was a recreational figure skater from the ages of 11 to about 16, and then periodically went to the rink before officially stopping at the age of 19. That is until January 2024, at the age of 24, when I laced up my skates and stepped back onto the ice.

I instantly fell back in love with the feeling of skating on the ice, and I knew that if I returned, I wanted to do it for the long haul this time. I began documenting my trips to the rink, just as a fun way to have video memories of my return to the hobby. Now that it’s been almost 8 months since I started skating again, I decided to share those videos on a YouTube channel dedicated to my adult figure skating journey. The channel is called Deja on Ice, and my first video is now live.

If you’re a figure skater yourself, a fan of sport, or just a curious mind intrigued by all that goes into skating, I hope you’ll follow along with my skating journey :).

  1. Congratulations on returning to a sport that you enjoy so much! I figure skated for three years, from when I was nine until I was twelve, when I sprained my ankle. But I’ve always loved skating—as a baby, my mom would skate around with me on her hip, then as soon as I learned to walk my mom had me on the ice and my family went ice skating nearly every weekend! It’s such a fun and freeing sport. I don’t think I’d go back to figure skating now, but you never know, and I’d still love to try hockey!

    1. I love that skating was such a special pastime for you and your family! There’s nothing like being on the ice. And skating can be such an individual sport, so it might be cool to experience the team aspect with hockey. Thanks for reading!
